Hawai‘i Wildlife Center 2009 Year End Report

Aloha nui loa,

2009 has flown by, and as we review our accomplishments, we are amazed at all of the progress we have made, especially in light of the extremely challenging economy. We are so grateful for our grantors this year, including the Atherton Family Foundation, Patagonia Hale‘iwa, Hawai‘i Chapter of The Wildlife Society, Kohala Lions Club, Starlight Foundation, and the Hawai‘i Community Foundation. Although we received more grants this year, the total amount received is significantly lower than last year. Our individual contributors include a substantial number of repeat donors along with new supporters, over 60%. MAHALO! (There is still time for you if you have not already renewed your support - click here to renew or join HWC supporters). We have continued to keep our operating costs low, with a notable decrease from our already frugal 2008 budget.

The most significant fundraising news is the major increase in services and materials donations as we have begun construction of our facility! We would like to recognize our design and construction team (click here to view the design/construction team) for their huge contribution of literally thousands of hours of professional services and for assisting in developing the in-kind donations with our many subcontractors and vendors. (Click here to see the growing list of contributors). We also thank all the other professional donations we continue to receive for legal, accounting, graphics, public relations, and more.

The demand for our programs has remained constant and could have easily doubled if staff and facilities were already available. We continued to provide an equal number of wildlife, education and public outreach programs as previous years. HWC participated in important endangered species programs including work with native seabirds, waterfowl, and migratory bird of prey.

HWC Phase I Building Construction
HWC Phase I Building Construction

We are thrilled by the excitement that has been intensifying at the HWC construction site. We moved from last year’s design, engineering and permitting phase to actual construction. It began with the installation of the construction office trailer donated by Tinguely Development. HWC is grateful for the use of two-thirds of the trailer for office space. Our utilities have been hooked up and wastewater system installed. We moved on to installation of aggregates, pouring of the concrete foundation, and we are now well into the framing phase, with siding and roofing to begin within a matter of weeks. The exterior building phase is scheduled for completion in February 2010.

Linda Elliott at Spotting ScopeThe other news includes the updates to our web site, www.hawaiiwildlifecenter.org; this includes an online Amazon store. You can now purchase Hawai‘i wildlife and conservation merchandise through our web site and a portion of the proceeds will go to HWC. (Click here to check out our new Amazon Store). The items featured include Dr. Robert J. Shallenberger’s (Vice President of the HWC board of directors), new book, Hawaiian Birds of the Sea: Na Manu Kai.

Going into this holiday season we have a lot to celebrate but we need your help to complete the construction of the HWC by this coming summer.  Your donation of any amount is critical in making this wildlife conservation and response resource a reality. The HWC will be the first native wildlife emergency response center in our State. It will enable us to save, rehabilitate and release threatened Hawaiian wildlife back into the wild.

You can also support Hawaii Wildlife Center through our Affiliates who contribute a portion of their proceeds to our work to conserve Hawaii's threatened wildlife. It is as easy as making every-day internets searches on GoodSearch.com and shopping on-line through GoodShop.com or our Amazon e-Store.
