Founded in 2006, the HWC development project purpose is to build and operate a 4500 square foot facility on the northern tip of the Big Island to treat and care for sick or injured avian species from throughout the State of Hawaii. Once completed, this will be the only such facility available. HWC has reached out to local government, Hawaiis conservation community, and the private sector. The response has been generous and heartening. Critically, a talented team of design and construction professionals has rallied to the mission of building our wildlife recovery center. With the donation of two acres from the Surety Kohala Corporation, our site was dedicated in April 2007 with groundbreaking following in June 2008. As of today we have completed Phase I of construction and we now have a weatherproof building, with the interior framed and ready for completion, and a fully graded site prepped for final landscaping. The windows and sliding glass doors have been installed and were all donated. The metal roofing, siding and gutters are complete along with all exterior painting, and paved access and parking areas are complete. We are pleased to announce that costs have come in an impressive 15% under budget; we are exceedingly proud of this fact, and grateful to our design / engineering / construction team for making this happen.
To date, HWC has received generous donations from government and private grants, in-kind professional services and materials, and community donations. We are now at 84% of our fund development campaign. To all who have supported us, we extend a grateful mahalo nui loa!
Now, we ask you to help us meet our capital construction target of $450,000 to build the HWC facility and open its doors in 2010.
