The interpretive courtyard of the Hawai‘i Wildlife Center has been thoughtfully designed to provide a high quality, aesthetic, and informative experience for visitors and residents.
Courtyard exhibits will portray native Hawaiian wildlife, the conservation challenges affecting these species, and the role of hands-on care and rehabilitation. In addition, a small retail sales outlet offering relevant natural history books and related products will be co-located with the receptionist’s office and open during regular business hours.
The outdoor courtyard will include the following components:
- Interpretive displays
- Outdoor wildlife recuperation area
- Native plant garden
- HWC “donor’s wall”
When HWC is fully operational, trained volunteer docents will escort visitors through the courtyard and other outdoor facilities. HWC docents will provide a richly informative orientation to the surrounding flora and exhibits.
Interpretive panels and hands-on exhibits will be installed onto courtyard walls and freestanding kiosks. Text, graphics and photographs will be developed to cover these and related topics:
- Evolution of Hawaiian wildlife
- Endangered species in Hawaii
- Natural history of Hawaiian seabirds and waterbirds
- Hawaiian cultural connections to native wildlife
- Conservation threats to Hawaiian wildlife
- The role of rehabilitation in conservation
- The process and sequence of wildlife rehabilitation
- Suggested locations to observe Hawaiian wildlife
- What you can do to help
