Veterinary Support

When the need for veterinary support arises, HWC utilizes the expertise of our primary care veterinarian, Dr. Juan Carlos Guerra. Mahalo nui to our previous primary care veterinarians, Dr. Lavine and Dr. Shetrone, for providing support and guidance as well.

About Dr. Guerra, DVM

IMG_0682Dr. Juan Carlos Guerra received his Bachelor of Science degree in Biological Sciences and Minor in Animal Sciences, as well as his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from Cornell University in Ithaca, NY. While attending the Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine, Dr. Guerra earned numerous scholarships and awards, including the American College of Veterinary Anesthesiologists’ Award in 2013. He also worked on equine leukemia research and was a member of the Men’s Polo team.

IMG_4422Dr. Guerra specialized in equine and large animal medicine, and is currently a mixed animal practitioner at Aina Hou Animal Hospital in Waimea, HI. Dr. Guerra also has an interest in wildlife medicine and its role in rehabilitation. He first volunteered at the Hawai‘i Wildlife Center during a trip to Hawai‘i Island in 2014 and assisted with patient examinations. He attended the 2015 New York State Wildlife Rehabilitation Council Seminar and completed the specialized program for Veterinarians and Veterinarian Technicians. Dr. Guerra’s completed sessions included wildlife caging, avian fracture repair, wildlife endoparasitology, wildlife medicine, leg and foot injuries in webbed-footed birds, wound healing and assessment factors, avian analgesia, wildlife anesthesia, and forensics necropsy. Dr. Guerra is excited to grow his partnership with the Hawai‘i Wildlife Center and looks forward to providing his veterinary expertise on HWC’s wildlife cases.
