We will try our best to post any one-time closures or changes to our hours here. Interested visitors are always welcome to call our office (808) 884-5000 during business hours with any questions.
Hours
Ho’opulama Science and Discovery Center is usually open Tues.-Sat. 10am-3pm. Retail store closes for lunch, but center exhibits remain open. Admission is free. Donations welcome.
HWC wildlife hospital and rehabilitation center is open seven days a week for wildlife rescue assistance and wildlife drop-off. Wildlife patients are not on display to public. Hospital hours are Mon.-Sun. 9am-5pm.
Hours may change without notice due to staffing limitations.

From Kona and South Kohala:
Start on Highway 19 (Queen Kaahumanu Hwy) and drive North until you reach the intersection with a stop sign of Kawaihae Harbor and Waimea Town. Turn left and drive to Kawaihae Harbor. Turn right onto Highway 270 (Akoni Pule Hwy), toward Mahukona and Hawi. Continue to drive eastward through Hawi Town and Kapa’au Town. Drive past the statue of King Kamehameha and the “Bond Historic District”. Lighthouse Road is located on the left hand side a short distance after the 24th mile marker. Head down the road and we are located on the right side. If you reach Kohala Middle School, you’ve gone slightly too far.
From Hilo and Waimea (Kamuela):
Start on Highway 19 drive along the Hamakua Coastline until you reach Waimea. Take a right and stay on Highway 19 at the Lindsey Road intersection traffic light. Stay on Highway 19 until you come to a small bridge. The road will fork so keep to your right. This is Highway 250 (Kohala Mountain Road) This will lead you to Hawi Town and Kapa’au Town, approximately 25 minutes. This scenic mountain road winds through pasture and ocean vistas until it ends at Highway 270 (Akoni Pule Road). Turn right and continue drive eastward through Hawi Town and Kapa’au Town.
